Austrian Lecture Series Features Palestinian Surgical Fellow and Israeli Surgeon from Hadassah
Talking for Peace—A Karl Kahane Lecture Series,” sponsored by The Bruno Kreisky Forum for International Dialogue in cooperation with the Karl Kahane Foundation, included a presentation on “Medical Ethics and Terror,” featuring the Hadassah Medical Center’s Prof. Avraham Rivkind, head of the Trauma Unit and Department of General Surgery, and Raja’l Fouzi George Qumyiseh, a Karl Kahane Fellow, who is receiving specialized training in surgery and traumatology at Hadassah.
Prof. Rivkind addressed the question, “Is it ethical to save the life of a terrorist?” For him, there is no question. He sees the patient and, immediately, he has to save a life.
The Karl Kahane Foundation grants scholarships to Palestinian physicians to obtain specialized medical training at Hadassah’s hospitals. Hadassah Austria has helped to fund several Palestinians for this clinical experience. When the physicians finish their training, they return to practice medicine in the Palestinian territories, bringing with them their experience of working side-by-side with their Israeli medical colleagues, building bridges of trust through the universal language of medicine.
